West Coast Trek
(Connemara) - 18-19th April 2009
A new event in the calendar of Irish charity walking events, the inaugural West Coast Trek is a fifty kilometre trek over the breathtaking landscapes of Connemara in the company of local guides; scholars and characters for whom the rich story of this place passionately dwells.
Two days of hiking will bring walkers to wildly contrasting landscapes in this place that where the wilderness itself provided refuge for thousands in the dark days after Cromwell. From our base in the colourful market town of Clifden, trekkers will experience the “two Connemaras”; the vast lakeland and indented coastlines of South Connemara and the hilly country of the North, around the Twelve Bens and the Mám Toirc mountains.
The challenge will take you on an adventure that needs to be experienced to be truly believed and will provide you with friendships and memories that will last a lifetime.
“On a day of bright sky, when the hills are of that intoxicating misty blue that belongs especially to the west, the bogland is a lovely far-reaching expanse of purple and rich brown: and the lakelets take on the quiet indescribable colour that comes from clear sky reflected in bog-water, while the sea-inlets glow with an intense but rather greener blue. On such a day the wanderer will thank his lucky star that it has brought him to Connemara”
